WhatsApp Privacy - Chrome Extension
Last Updated: November 21, 2025
Short version
The WhatsApp Privacy Chrome extension by AutoWA does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. Everything happens locally in your browser. The only data the extension touches is the on/off state of its own toggle switches, which is stored in your browser via chrome.storage. We never read or transmit your WhatsApp messages, contacts, or any other content.
This Privacy Policy applies to the "WhatsApp Privacy - by AutoWA" Chrome extension (the "Extension"), published by AutoWA ("we", "us", "our") on the Chrome Web Store. It does not cover other AutoWA products or services - those are covered by our main privacy policy.
The Extension has a single purpose: to visually blur profile pictures, contact names, phone numbers, and message text on web.whatsapp.com so that the user can share their screen, take screenshots, or work in public without exposing private content. The Extension is a visual layer only - it does not modify, send, receive, or store any WhatsApp data.
We collect nothing. Specifically, the Extension does not collect, transmit, store on a remote server, or share any of the following:
The Extension stores a small amount of data locally in your browser only, using the standard Chrome chrome.storage.sync API. This data consists exclusively of the on/off state of the following user preferences:
These five boolean values never leave your browser, except that Chrome itself may synchronise them across browsers signed in to the same Google account (this is a standard Chrome feature governed by Google's own privacy policy, not by us - the data is encrypted and we never receive it).
storage permission: used solely to remember your toggle preferences across browser sessions via chrome.storage.sync.https://web.whatsapp.com/*: used solely to inject the CSS that performs the visual blurring on the WhatsApp Web page. The Extension does not read, transmit, or store any content from this page. The Extension does not request any other permissions. It does not run on any website other than web.whatsapp.com.
The Extension does not send any data to AutoWA, to Google (other than the local sync behaviour described above), or to any other third party. It does not contain analytics, advertising, fingerprinting, or tracking scripts of any kind. It does not use cookies. It does not communicate with any remote server.
Because we do not collect any personal data through the Extension:
This satisfies the requirements of the Chrome Web Store Limited Use policy.
The Extension is not directed to children under 13. Because we do not collect any personal information at all, we cannot knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
The Extension runs entirely on your device. Your toggle preferences are protected by the security of your own browser and (if you have Chrome Sync enabled) by Google's encryption. Because we transmit no data, there is nothing for us to lose to a server breach.
We may update this policy if the Extension changes. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date above and, where appropriate, by an in-product notice. Continued use of the Extension after a change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
